Love Languages - Words of Affirmation
Are you ever disappointed when a gift doesn’t have a card with a meaningful note attached to it?
Does it sting a bit when you don’t get a “Thank you” for your efforts?
Do you question your value to someone if you don’t hear from them regularly?

If so, Words of Affirmation might be your primary love language. Whether written or spoken, words are powerful and can be uplifting or devastating. Compliments, gratitude, encouragement are life giving to a person who identifies this as their primary love language.

Being affirmed promotes empathy and compassion and can increase intimacy! Words of affirmation can look like commenting on someone’s appearance, recognizing their achievements, or being a ready listener as they process their day. Sending a text message to connect or initiating time to chat communicates your support and love in rich ways.

Knowing that words are so meaningful to those with this love language, it’s important to note that it’s especially valuable to choose your words wisely when addressing something negative. Your tone and how you express yourself will have a significant impact. You may want to cushion your constructive comment with compliments to deter defensiveness.

If you aren’t as comfortable communicating on the fly then consider writing your thoughts down to express your love. Keep this love language simple and frequent - Words of Affirmation doesn’t have to be a flowery poem to be meaningful! A sticky note on the dash of their car, a silly text, and regularly sharing “I love you” with them re-enforces their value to you.
